British Argentina by lamnay British Argentina by lamnay
After the failed Franco-Spanish Reconquista, the newly independent nations of South America realized they were still very vulnerable and had only been saved by British intervention. In time the Spanish would rebuild their fleet and try again.

As British protectorates the Ottoman and Chinese empires had grown in size and wealth, so following their example, Gran Colombia, Argentina and Chile all applied for protectorate status.

i don't care if it's "alternate history " this is incredibly offensive to all the soldiers who lost their lives so that wouldn't happen. I also find amussing that people from Great Britain actually believe the islands are their, they should really get their geographical and historical facts right

well, actually they were first conquered by spain and they granted the rights over them to our country when we became independant. then your pirate nation came and stole them. besides if you look at this image: storni.files.wordpress.com/200… ;  you will see that the islands are in Argentina's continental platform

If you want to bring up Spain and history let's remember who tried to invade England with a huge armada? Let's remember who sided with Napoleon to invade England again only a few centuries later...

I am close to actual Spaniards (not colonists) and none of them bring up this or talk of more war over land. Why are a bunch of colonists who themselves living on land they stole from native Americans (a huge amount of land...Argentina is not small) so worried by a few islands?

i'll answer in order:
1)it was Spain not Argentina

2) again, it was Spain not Argentina

3) Argentinians are not colonists, to be a colonist you have to have a colony. The aborigins in my country were massacred by one of the first presidents , something i feel deeply sorry for, since their culture and respect for nature are values that I deeply aprecciate, i don't stand for the racist ideas that originated that massacre, it was unnecesary ( fun fact the people that did this wanted to attract British inmigrants to populate the Patagonia). fortunately not all the aborigins are dead, and people are trying hard to keep their culture alive

4) Then why did England worry about islands that where miles away from their actual country ? We worried ( and still worry ) about them because we are a proud nation who had a hard time becoming independant and we didn't want anyone taking our land from us again.

Lastly i don't think war is the solution to anything, I think dialogue is a better option, that's why our government has taken this issue to the UN

Ok so let's pick hairs.

Argentinians are for the most part the descendants of mostly Spanish colonists - would you accept that seeing as there are no indigenous peoples anywhere in South America who spoke Spanish and practised Latin culture/religion 600 years ago or more? Anyone living there today who is not of native stock is someone living on land ultimately taken by others.

I commend you on feeling sorry for the attempted genocide of the aborigines of what is now Argentina - that is a good attitude to have.

On the subject of aborigines the Falklands never had a native people - it may have been visited by Fuegians but no one ever settled there until 1764 when the FRENCH established Port Louis. In 1766 the BRITISH established Port Egmont. It is debatable that the two ports even knew about each other.

France renounced her claims on Port Louis and the Islands in 1766 to Spain (your mother country) who upon discovery of Port Egmont  attacked and seized it - however it was returned to Britain in 1770.

Both British and Spainish settlements co-existed until 1774 when Britain left due for economic and strategic reasons, leaving behind a plague claiming the lands for Britain.

After this it was used mostly as a prison garrison by Spain, who ultimately abandoned it between 1806 and 1811...leaving behind a few fishermen and strays.

In 1823 German born Luis Vernet w
as granted right to settle for fishing and cattle raising who actually did fairly well in developing a settlement with the permission of the newly independent from Spain nation of Argentina. This came to an end when US Commander Silas Duncan turned up in the USS Lexington in 1831 and declared the island government had ended...

Argentina did try to establish a garrison to reassert it's claims with a garrison...which failed when it mutinied in 1833. A year later Britain returned and reasserted it's claim. Aside from a malcontent rebellion involving the murder of civillians led by gauchos the Falklands become a British Crown colony in 1840 and permanent settlement by British people followed who have lived there to this very day.

Despite both Argentina and Britain promising to talk peacefully at the UN about the Islands and Britain actually preparing to hand them over a strong lobby from the people who live in the Falkands prevented this. Britain has since taken the stance that if the people there wish to be Argentinian it will hand over the Falkands. If they do not it will support them as they are British and have lived there longer than any other people.

Argentina on the other hand has attempted an invasion, and continued to have leaders who bang the war drum over the islands - regardless of what the people who live there wish.

Now with potential oil reserves found near the Falklands the Argentinian government is once again banging the war drum over the Falklands...once again completely disregarding the fact that the people who live there are British and not Argentinian or Spanish or Aborigines.

You asked why we care about somewhere far away? Well we care about the wishes of our people. Unlike your government who has brutally murdered thousands of it's own people and disregarded their wishes over and over again we simply leave the issue to the folk there...who wish to remain British and have repeatedly voted so.

So it comes down to does Argentina wish to once again distract it's people from it's wicked and corrupt leaders by risking war with Britain over the Islands? The Falklands are much better defended now, with a permanent destroyer presence and at least one hunter-killer nuclear submarine in the area at all times.

Perhaps Argentina should just accept that unless it wants to commit genocide to eject a people who have lived there for over 150 years they might have to just accept Falklands is part of Britain. Argentina already has killed it's own people and millions of it's own natives and continues to preach false claims over the Islands that their people lived on for less than 20 years almost 200 years ago. Britain simply doesn't trust the war drum banging of Argentina and the people who live there have absolutely no desire to be part of Argentina so the matter should be closed and talks of closer ties and co-operation under way.

That's too bad for you, because you're not getting them back. Argentina is a weak and pathetic nation, and you proved yourselves so back in 1982. Remember the Belgrano? She's at the bottom of the sea, last time I checked.

oh so bad that the UN is considering the topic (bad for you obviusly). last time i checked Tatcher was dead and if global warming keeps this pace your island will sink back in the ocean soon. And don't forget that we kicked your ass the first two times you tried to invade us. And in 1982 you didn't fight against soldiers you fought against 18 years old boys who didn't have a choice but to fight, and almost didn't have any trainig that's not something to be proud of you know? that's quite shameful, but you seem proud of it, that says a loooot about you

You believe in that global warming bullshit? And you're even stupider (argies usually are) if you think that the UN is going to make any difference. The UN may be a pathetic, hippy dippy PC load of rubbish, but it has zero power. And I'm glad you argies got killed in the war, it should have taught you not to try and invade British sovereign territory again. But, argies are usually stupid, so you probably might. Well, at least a second defeat may humiliate you into finally giving up.
